„We are the champions, no time for losers, ‚cause we are the champions, of the world!“
We sang this a couple of times on the 13th July, as loud as possible, hugging strangers in a crowd of black-red-golden flags.
Why? Because Germany won the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil and I can assure you, it was a hell of a party! Celebrating out on the streets, in motorcades or just at home with a pint of good old german beer: the country was (and still is) out of control, in a positive way! You could say we’d definitely make it to the final in a „Celebrating World Cup“!
But now, after a month of football (or soccer as some of you may say), a month of wearing our country’s colours with pride and a month full of emotions, it’s over.
And what is left? What do we take with us? Nothing? Is it just a sports event?
I think the pictures I have in my head, and probably a lot of you as well, from the last month answer those questions really quickly. For me, the World Cup brings together people from all over the world, with the same interests in a (mostly) fun and enjoyable environment. Every four years people dress up in their team colours because their heart is beating for their country. They love being part of a crowd, being part of a movement with people who feel exactly the same. It’s only in those years when country’s like Germany, with all it’s (dark) history are brave enough to hold their flag up high and to be proud of themselves. I personally enjoy those years a lot, because I love seeing people being proud of their home, not being embarrassed or afraid to show where they’re from and I love seeing all those country’s and cultures having one big party together.
I think the World Cup is so much more than just a sports event. It’s the world coming together! Coming back to the questions.. What is left for us? Memories! Great memories of a great summer: being surrounded by people who share the same interests, crying and laughing with your country, discussing the newest referee mistakes with your colleagues at work and having one big party after every win. I can’t describe what it really is, that makes it so special. Maybe it’s the people, the atmosphere, the summer.. But it’s probably all those things together. It is and always has been far more than „just a sports event“ – it’s a phenomenon!
And if you can’t get enough of all the „goose pimple moments“, then you should definitely watch this FIFA celebrations of the world cup video !
Q: Where are you from and who were you cheering for?
Lots of love xo
